How compression works
JPG, WebP and AVIF are lossy formats: lowering quality discards fine detail the eye rarely notices, which shrinks the file dramatically. PNG is lossless, so instead Pixnex can reduce the number of colours in the palette — great for screenshots, logos and flat graphics, less suitable for photos.
When the file gets bigger
Re-encoding an already well-optimized image at high quality can produce a larger file. Pixnex always shows the real result and flags any increase, so you can lower the quality, switch formats, or simply keep your original.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. This tool decodes and re-encodes your images inside your browser tab using built-in browser features. The files never leave your device unless you choose to share the downloaded results.
What quality should I choose?
For photos on the web, 70–80 usually looks identical to the original at a fraction of the size. Go lower for thumbnails, higher for print or product zoom images.
Does compression remove metadata?
Yes. Re-encoding through the browser canvas drops EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location. Orientation is applied to the pixels first so photos stay upright.
